Kandoobi Animal Edition for iPhone and iPad Review and Giveaway!

May 01, 12 Baby playing with Kandoobi

The iTunes app store has many children’s apps that it may be a bit overwhelming to look through. But I’m very delighted to have found Kandoobi Animal Edition (iTunes)! It’s a beautiful top-rated children’s game for the iPhone and iPad. It’s a 4-in-1 activity app that will surely keep your little toddler busy. With over 100 different characters to play with in each activity, this app offers a lot of variety that’s not usually found in young children’s apps.

When you first load the app, you’re welcomed with a colorful screen filled with a fun musical tune. The four different activities to choose from appear as four big buttons across the screen.

The four activities are:

  • Letters. First, select a character to start the game. The next screen will display letters that are jumbled up on the left side. At the bottom of the screen is the word spelled out in gray. To finish the game, the child drags the letters on the left side and match them on the bottom screen. A voice will sound out each letter as your child drags them into the boxes. Your child doesn’t need to learn how to spell to play this game, but they’re definitely learning to sound out letters and words, as well as how to use the alphabet. Once your child spells out the word correctly, the animal hops away and a new one comes on the screen.

  • Coloring. This activity lets your child color one of Kabdoobi’s many animals. On the bottom screen, select a character outline. The animal will appear on the screen for the child to color. There’s a palette of colors at the bottom of the screen, along with the options for a pencil, paintbrush, and eraser. If your child prefer to draw their own masterpiece, they can use the blank page as well. After your child is done, there’s an option to save the image to your camera roll. Simple as that, and no messy crayons were required!

  • Scratch & Fill. This activity is like the opposite of coloring a character. Select your character and swipe it to reveal its colors. Think of it like a lottery ticket where you’re scratching off the grey cover. This activity is most appropriate for the very young kids. I think this activity can be improved is the name of the type of animal is displayed too. That way, they’re getting some spelling/reading value out of the game.

  • Matching. For this activity, your child gets to guess the mystery animal and find a match for it. The mystery animal’s shape will appear on the top of the screen. Below will be three choices for your child to choose from. It’s a great activity for your child to learn about shapes and shadows.

Currently, there are 120 characters to choose from in each activity. So it’s a different game every time your child plays it. Characters include nicely dressed frogs, beavers, to colorful seahorses and ladybugs. Each animal is full of personality, yet still recognizable as an animal. The graphics are very clean and polished, and the buttons and options are user-friendly, especially for the little ones.

I love how there’s a voice telling my child everything that she clicks on. For example, when she taps on the ‘pencil’ option in the Drawing activity, it will say “pencil”. Or when an animal is selected for a game, the animal’s name is announced. Children benefit from hearing new words repeated often, and I like how this app instills that in every aspect of the games.

This app is appropriate for children 1 and a half to 5 years old. Each activity is bright and colorful, yet fun and educational at the same time. With the wide variety of animals to play with and 4 different activities, your child will learn a lot without getting bored too quickly like with other young children apps.

Kandoobi Animal Edition is available in the iTunes app store for $2.99. For more information, visit Kandoobi.com
